Doctor Who: the Daleks

William Hartnell:

Season 1: “The Daleks” – This is the first series of episodes ever with the Daleks. It gives quite a bit of background information about where the Daleks came from, but doesn’t go into full detail about how they came to be the way they are.

In this series of episodes, the Doctor and his travelling companians end up on the Dalek home planet, Scaro. Here is more information on the series known as “The Daleks”!

Episodes: the old series took several episodes to finish a story because they were much shorter than the new series. For that reason, each storyline is split up into several episodes. Here are all the episodes on YouTube for “The Daleks.”
“The Dead Planet”
“The Survivors”
“The Escape”
“The Expedition”
“The Ordeal”
“The Rescue”

Comentary: I was glad to see this episode because I have only recently begun watching the modern Doctor Who, and don’t understand all the tention and history between the Doctor and the Daleks.

This storyline doesn’t explain everything about how the Daleks came to be what they are, but it gives clues about their beginnings. They began on the planet Scaro. This planet had two races that couldn’t get alone (same old story). After a nuclear war nearly wiped out both races, they evolved to survive in different ways. The Daleks devolved into an aggresive unfeeling race that fed off radiation. The Thals evolved into a peaceful race that eventually came full swing back around to huminoid form.

However, they are a far cry from what they are in the modern series. They have no force field, and can be easily fooled. The Doctor and his companians (which include his panic-prone neice Susan who seems to have been cast solely for her abitlity to freak out like a two year old) escape easily from the grasp of the Daleks and help the Thals steal food with very little trouble. In fact, the hardest part of the whole ordeal didn’t involve the Daleks at all!

A word on Susan: This character annoys me. Sometimes I just want to slap her! She screams and thrashes about at the first sign of trouble. I find these panic attacks to be very unbelieveable in the grandaughter of the Doctor. After countless battles, close calls, and travelling through time and space, you would think she’d have grown some backbone!

Yeah, I’m a fan of Doctor Who

I adore Doctor Who. A couple months ago my husband and I began watching the new series starring Christopher Eccleston as the 9th Doctor. We instantly fell in love with it all over again! (He had been a fan back in the Tom Baker days).

But it’s hard coming into Doctor Who without knowing everything that led up to who he is now. So recently I’ve been going back and watching the series from the beginning; starting with the first Doctor, William Hartnell.

For my own benefit, I am going to track the progression of the Doctor’s interaction with the Daleks and other continuing beasties :-) I am going to start with the Daleks because they seem to be Public Enemy #1.

Please be patient, this is something I do in my free time, which isn’t much :-) It may take me a while to get information up.

To My Calvinist Friends on John Calvin’s 500 Birthday

I was just going to post one thing, and that was:

MICHAEL SERVETUS!!

But then I figured that would only start a fire storm since Mr. Servetus’ execution is still such a controversial issue. :P

Therefore, I will just leave you with some Scripture.

I Corinthians 3:4-7 (ESV)

For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human?
What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.

Dear Mercy,
Today we brought you home from the hospital. The past two days have been a blur. I liked having people that know what they are doing around to help with you. Sometimes you cry, and I simply don’t know what to do! I thought I knew a lot about babies, but now everything seems new and strange.

As we drove home in silence, our minds racing with questions and concerns, I couldn’t stop looking at you. I am still sore from the delivery, but you are so beautiful i drives all thoughts of the pain away. Your tiny fingers, your oversized big toes, and oh, that hair!!! I keep running my fingers through it. It’s amazing that such a little head can have so much! I makes you look very doll-like.

I keep running everything over in my mind; “Do we have enough diapers? Feed 15 minutes on each side every 2-3 hours. Her poo should be yellow within 5 days. Why hasn’t my milk come in yet! Is she getting enough to eat? Do we have enough diapers? What should she wear when grandmamma comes? Man, I am soooooo tired! Do we have enough diapers?”

Now you are sleeping and we are waiting for Daddy to get back from the airport with Grandmamma. The Coleys brought supper over. Our extended family from church has been so helpful and supportive. I can’t wait for you to meet them all! Grandmammo Stewart is coming to stay with us for a few weeks, and I am looking forward to showing you off :-)

You’re so peaceful right now, my darling. I’m still scared and nervous, and anxious, but my heart is overflowing with love. You are so dear to me.

Love,
Mommy

Dear Mercy,

Today, my dearest thing, you were born. I hardly knew what to think of you when you came out. All those months of feeling you move inside me, and then there you were! This tiny bundle of motion and a head full of dark brown hair! Immediately your eyes shot open! I think you started looking around the room almost as soon as you started breathing on your own.

Your daddy is in awe of you. He was such a trooper throughout it all and now it seems so unreal that you are actually here! I have held you in my arms, and looked into your eyes. You’re already very strong. Your eyes are dark blue. Oh my angel! You are so beautiful! I feel as though I’m going to cry at any given moment. But that may just be from lack of sleep. Your daddy and I are both very very tired. Auntie Ruth too. She stayed to welcome you into this world.

We’re still a bit overwhelmed at the moment. It’s hard to believe you are ours, and that we are going to take you home with us to be a part of our family! I’m scared to death to be at home alone with you, but I’m excited to get to know you and cuddle with you for hours and hours. birth picture 3

Love,
Your Mommy

Korg GA30

You know, that book!

For the past two weeks I have been studying what the Word of God has to say about, well, the Word of God! It started because I was memorizing the Kids4Truth lessons on God’s Word. We plan on using this program with Mercy, and I realized that I need to memorize these truths and versus myself before teaching them to her. It is a wonderful program that focuses on teaching children biblical doctrine with versus to support each statements. I started with the section on God’s Word.

Most of them were pretty straightforward and all of them were things I had heard before. But the question “How does God want us to feel about His Word,” caught my attention. The answer is, “He wants us to love it, enjoy it, believe it, and desire to obey it.” The versus used to support this truth were Psalm 119:97 and 1:2. This stopped me dead in my tracks. Of course I would adamantly claim to believe the Bible and desire to obey it, but the versus of Psalm 119, “Oh how I love Thy law! It is my meditation all the day,” got me thinking. I grew up in a school where the Bible was part of our curriculum. It was a textbook. We were told that it was an amazing book, a wonderful book, but to us it had about as much awe and wonder as Bob Jones history or literature text books. Now that I am grown, I know I am supposed to read it every day, but do I love it? Do I enjoy reading it? How much do I think about it throughout the day?

I was very convicted by this, and began to realize the many reasons why all true believers should not only believe and study, but love, enjoy, and cherish this book! It is from God, the Creator of the universe, and written especially for us! When we stop to think about that fact alone, it should get us excited! What if I were to receive a note from someone very special to me? What would I do with it? Would it be a chore for me to read it? Would I have to make myself sit down and study it? NO! I would read it over and over and memorize every word. And yet, we treat God’s letters to us as though they were boring, uninteresting, and a chore to read!? It also introduces us to Jesus Christ, and tells us how we can have a relationship with God!

But how do you go about developing a love for something? This was actually easier than I thought it would be. Like everything else we love, there is the element of choice. I decided to make it a priority in my life, and you know what? It has become one. The more I study and meditate on what the book says, the more I develop an affection for it. I don’t know if I am to the point where I can honestly say I meditate on God’s Word day and night, but I have changed my thinking. Now, I am choosing to make the effort to think about it. And that has made all the difference.
